Slashing Pumpkins!
Every year after Halloween we buy
pumpkins on sale and cut them with a sword.
To ensure safety, students first spend
some time reviewing and practicing good cutting form with a wooden sword
(bokken).
Then it's time for the cutting stand,
pumpkins, and samurai fantasies. Iaido students demonstrate first, and
then anyone who wants a turn can try.
After each person cuts, the sword must
be wiped immediately as steel blades rust very quickly. When cutting is
finished for the day, the sword is cleaned thoroughly and finished with
a light coat of oil.
Then we pick up the pumpkin pieces (and
take some home to make soup!)
Slashing Pumpkins is one of our most
popular annual events.
