The art of
Aikido is a
sophisticated and elegant method of self-defense. Its philosophy holds peace to be the
highest form of enlightenment.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), known
as Osensei (great teacher) to Aikido students throughout the world.
Osensei was physically a small man but a strong and formidable martial artist.
He was also deeply spiritual, and was troubled by contention and strife. He believed that
to resolve personal conflict we must develop a peaceful heart, and that the warrior's duty
is to spread peace throughout the world.
As he explored these ideas in his training, he developed new movements that met
force with harmony.
