Want to know more about Aikido? Come and watch a class. Visitors are always welcome.

Classes are open to adults and children aged 10+.  
Admission to Intermediate/Advanced classes by permission of the instructor.  
All members of the teaching staff are certified by the Aikido Association of America

New Students: If you have a gi (martial arts uniform), you may wear it with a white belt. Otherwise, please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Long sweat pants are preferable to shorts. Please arrive a few minutes before class starts.

Class Definitions

Basics

Open to: everyone
Class focus: proficiency in basic rolling and falling; examination requirements for the Aikido Association of America 7th and 6th kyu ranks
Emphasis: movement fundamentals and principles, technical detail
Class format: stretching, and aikido exercises/techniques

All Levels

Open to: everyone
Class focus: intermediate rolling and falling; examination requirements for kyu ranks
Emphasis: intermediate level material for students of all levels
Class format: stretching, aikido exercises, and techniques

Intermediate

Open to: students 7th kyu and above, or with instructor's permission
Class focus: intermediate rolling and falling; examination requirements for mid kyu ranks
Emphasis: varies but may include technical detail and more advanced applications and adaptations of technique
Class format: student requests taken

Advanced

Open to: students 2nd kyu and above, or with instructor's permission
Class focus: examination requirements for upper kyu and dan ranks, and instructor training
Emphasis: self-paced in-depth study of techniques and concepts
Class format: group training in techniques

Weapons

Basics: open to everyone 
Class focus: handling weapons, usage, forms, basic defense
Emphasis: forms and concepts

 

Intermediate: students 7th kyu and above
Class focus: forms, defense with weapons, and defense against weapons
Emphasis: forms and weapons usage

 

Advanced: students 2nd kyu and above, or with instructor's permission
Class focus: paired exercises
Emphasis: developing weapons skills with a partner

Meditation

 

Open to Aikido and Iaido students

Open to: everyone
Class focus: breathing, posture, centering, and mindfulness
Emphasis: training to live in the "now" through meditation
Class format: sitting, standing, and movement meditation

Iaido


Separate registration required for this class

Open to: everyone
Class focus: usage and etiquette of the Japanese sword
Emphasis: training in Aikido Toho Iai, and other classical styles

Class format: individual assistance, self-study, and demonstration
Requirement: bokken (provided), or iaito (practice sword) and hakama
